Brookhaven Hamlet was first settled in 1681 and Bellport Village was established in the early 1800’s. Part of Brookhaven Hamlet is a designated “historic district” within the Town of Brookhaven. In 1980, the National Register of Historic Places added to the Register over 80 houses in Bellport Village. In 2001 Bellport Village established a Historic Preservation Commission, which has since designated four historic districts in the village. Resource Type: Advocacy, Conservation

The Burying Ground Preservation Group, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to identifying, recording, and preserving historic burying grounds, cemeteries and burial sites.

We serve as a resource for historians, genealogists and others seeking to preserve and restore historic gravestones and monuments. The BGPG undertakes surveys, uploads photographs and inscriptions into searchable databases, conducts conditions assessments, facilitates the restoration and preservation of grave markers and related cemetery features, and creates educational programs that encourage public awareness of these fragile historical resources. By advocating for the protection of historic burying grounds and cemeteries, the BGPG seeks to preserve these important historic sites and the vital records they contain. BGPG charges a reasonable fee for its professional expertise and the tasks associated with each project, including guidance for sources of funding such as charitable foundations, civic organizations, municipalities and concerned citizens. True to its mission of promoting community support, the BGPG trains and encourages volunteerism at every possible level to help defray costs and maximize the budget for every project. BGPG was inspired by an awareness that irreplaceable headstones and monuments are deteriorating at a rapid rate. By applying appropriate measures, this process can be slowed or reversed and unique personal data can be preserved. Often grave markers are the only source of information about the people, places, and events that have shaped communities. BGPG connects preservation professionals with elected officials, community members and volunteers to protect burying grounds, cemeteries, and burial sites. It creates public awareness of these fragile resources and offers presentations and interactive workshops designed to encourage support from the community.

Through education and demonstration, the BGPG preserves and records historic headstones and monuments for future generations.

From the earliest settlers who farmed shellfish and built dugout canoes, to residents and visitors of today who enjoy sunny beaches and world-class boating, Long Island’s story is inextricably linked with the sea.

The Long Island Maritime Museum is committed to the research, preservation and interpretation of our region’s rich nautical heritage and the role of Long Island in our national maritime story. Whether it’s boat building, shipwrecks, shellfish harvesting or recreational boating that captures your imagination, it’s all here under our roofs, in our galleries and at our many events and programs. Kids will discover the links between the Island's maritime and natural histories. They wil l encounter some of the amazing creatures living in our local waters.

The History of the Long Island Maritime Museum

On December 16, 1966 a group of concerned citizens founded the Suffolk Marine Museum dedicated to the collection and preservation of artifacts of the maritime history of Long Island, New York. Long Island, 120 miles long and 14 miles wide, bounded by the Long Island Sound to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the south and New York City to the west has, since our nation's beginning, been deeply involved in its maritime history. Native Americans, followed by settlers from New England, immigrants from Europe and suburbanites from New York City have fished, harvested shellfish, gone whaling and built ships and boats on its shores. Today, pleasure boating is one of Long Island's largest industries.

With this rich heritage as a foundation, the Museum, located in West Sayville, on the Great South Bay, opened its doors to the public on May 1, 1968. It has been open on a regular schedule ever since. The Museum received its absolute charter from the New York State Board of Regents in November, 1983.The Board of Trustees, in cooperation with the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation chose a path of development which provided for a Museum Board, with its fund-raising abilities, to develop the collection of vessels, historic buildings, machinery and artifacts. The Parks Department supported the staff and maintenance costs. The staff was supplemented by state, federal and private grants for special projects.

In 1993, direct operational support from Suffolk County ceased. Operations were privatized under the corporate identity, Long Island Maritime Museum. That year the Museum's charter was amended to reflect a change of operating name to the Long Island Maritime Museum. This change reflected the expansion the Museum's focus and audience to include all of Long Island. Today, a full time staff of two, six to ten part timers and a dedicated volunteer force successfully operate the Museum and its programs. Many of our maintenance and restoration projects have been adopted by volunteers, under staff supervision, as educational programs.

To recognize and pay tribute to Long Island's diverse ethnic cultures, we support Irish stepdance, African American quilting, gospel and blues music, Jewish klezmer music, Native American stories and crafts, and the traditions of recent immigrants from Central and South America, India and Asia. Through field interviews and oral histories, we seek to break down the barriers that divide us, so that we can share in the power and excellence of our family traditions. Southampton African American Museum

How it all started. In 2004, a local resident, Gloria Cannon, had the founding idea to preserve “The Barbershop”—an iconic local gathering place for Blacks in the late 40’s. She wanted to ensure that owner/builder/barber Emanuel Seymore’s legacy be recognized, as well as that of “Fives”—a restaurant and juke joint built and owned by Arthur Robinson—the other iconic establishment where locals who where part of the Great Migration secured as their safe haven. After a dusty day of labor—picking potatoes, scrubbing toilets and floors, ironing, and other domestic work—they would dress up and step high to “Fives”. And on a typical Saturday or Sunday evening, the line up at the infamous hot spot included the soulful sounds of soloist Sylvia Francis “Snooks”Smith, the suit sweating, rhythmic, hip curling, back jerking vocals of Little Curtis (Curtis Highsmith Sr.) and the Big Men, as well as many other local performers. A good time was had by all. Ms. Cannon’s daughter Bonnie approached another local resident, Brenda Simmons, to help with carrying out her mom’s plan to keep the legacy of the barbershop/beauty parlor and juke joint alive. Brenda gladly agreed to help out, as she was born and raised in Southampton, and is the niece of Evelyn Baxter, the beautician who shared the building with Mr. Seymore. A personal connection. Brenda often reminisces about being 11-years-old, eager and excited to go to the beauty parlor and answer the phone and schedule hair appointments for her auntie (fondly called Aunt Et). One of her best memories was being excited when asked by her auntie to do coffee runs to the local greasy spoon restaurant at the corner. Her Auntie always told her she could keep the small change. With a big grin, she would have her choice of purchasing her favorite sweets. Brenda also had the generally-forbidden privilege of going to the men’s side of the barbershop when her Auntie would ask to deliver something to Mr. Seymore. Nancy Stevens-Smith also recalls fond memories of getting her Sunday do’s, as the shop was THE spot where most of the black girls and women came to look their best, no matter what the occasion. To fulfill Gloria Cannon’s heartfelt wish, Bonnie and Brenda went to meet with the Town Supervisor at the time, Linda Kabot, to share their somewhat outlandish proposal of establishing an African American Museum in the world-renowned destination known as “Da Hamptons”. The first thing Supervisor Kabot suggested was to establish the museum as a nonprofit. Secondly, she strongly suggested a campaign to get the museum’s name known through the village and beyond, as this was most likely going to be a long, drawn out process. So the official name African American Museum of the East End and Center for Excellence (AAMEE) was established. Brenda envisioned this iconic space to fulfill the vision of promoting education and excellence, and the task of making that vision a reality was put in motion.

The Southampton History Museum was organized in 1898 and incorporated in 1910. In its early days, the Museum collected and exhibited historical objects and documents relating to the history and development of Southampton, organized pageants and gave lectures on antiques. By 1960 the Rogers Mansion property had expanded to include 12 historic structures including an 1830 one-room schoolhouse, an 1825 barn and a 19th century paint store, among others. The Mansion is the main administrative center for the organization and is open year-round. Today the Museum's mission is to preserve and promote the history and culture of the Town of Southampton by engaging and inspiring diverse audiences. It does this through the management of 4 separate properties with 14 historic buildings that contain changing exhibits on historic topics, a research center and educational programs for schoolchildren and adults. The Rogers Mansion contains an extensive research library and archives dedicated to the history of Southampton and its surrounding areas. The library currently contains over 8,000 volumes, photographs, maps and other archival materials including a wide range of subjects from account books to family memorabilia. The Jazz Loft

Resource Type: Cultural, Education, Preservation

The Jazz Loft officially opened in May of 2016. Originally built in 1941, the building was the Suffolk Museum, now the Long Island Museum. Philanthropist Ward Melville, owner of Thom McAnn shoes, designed all of Stony Brook Village, including the Suffolk Museum. At the time Stony Brook Village was the first pre-designed shopping center in the United States of America. The Suffolk Museum was actually two older structures that existed in other parts of the town. The larger part of the building was the original 1909 Firehouse and the smaller part was a circa 1850s structure dubbed the "Stone Jug" because of its stone exterior. Mr. Melville moved both buildings to their current site, joined them together, and in doing so added one of the many outstanding venues the village prides itself in having. After the Suffolk Museum moved up the road and became the Long Island Museum, the building served as the Garden Exchange for roughly 40 years. A consignment and antique center run by the Garden Club, many people found wonderful treasures there that still adorn their homes. After a ten year vacancy the Jazz Loft is the third tenant in the buildings 75 year history. The Jazz Loft's mission is one of Jazz preservation, education, and performance, and has quickly become the premier destination for all things Jazz. Presenting a full performance calendar of local, national and international artists in our period 1940s second floor performance space the Loft also has an extensive education program. Our Pre College Jazz Institute in collaboration with Stony Brook University offers training in jazz theory, performance and masterclass settings to outstanding high school musicians. Our Young at Heart program offers music therapy presentations for those with memory loss and their caregivers. A monthly lecture series and scheduled family concerts round out our community outreach endeavors which are due in part to an outstanding team of sponsors and community leaders. The Jazz Lofts final mission point is that of preservation which is alive and well and on view 24/7 in our 6,000 square feet of original jazz memorabilia spanning 100 years of the American born art form celebrating not only the music, but art and photography as well throughout our many galleries.
